Favourite Classic sci-fi/Creature feature movies.

Just thought I'd start this thread, so we can all throw a title in randomly to remind ourselves of some of the classics, and hopefully learn a few titles we were unaware of. So I'll start with just two for now.

Colossus: The Forbin Project. Never heard of this until a few months ago, it's a brilliantly made film, definately one of those "They don't make 'em like this anymore" films.

World Without End. I bang on about this in a blog post, spoilers though!! http://thesmallworldofalt.com/?p=90

Nice to see some recognition for the Forbin Project, it's a forgotten classic.

Two of my faves are The Andromeda Strain (the original movie - not the recent made for TV remake) and Forbidden Planet starring a young Leslie Neilsen. Awesome movie, great effects and very influential.

I was thinking just the other day how surprising it was that 'The Creature From The Black Lagoon' hasn't been remade / rebooted / reimagined / whatever. Of course I nip over to IMDb and and there it is in pre-production slated for release in 2011.

Anyway the original is a classic 50s monster movie.

Ah, The Time Machine, one of my most beloved films, I always revert to an 8 year old when ever I see it. Rod Taylor, like the Uncle I never had.

That's the one. It has 9 different titles according to IMDB which must be a record.

All three are great films, Clint Eastwood gets his first screen role in the second film, and both Jeff Morrow and Rex Reason (see This Island Earth) in the third installment, and Jeff is fantastic in this movie too, a real tortured, jealous character, quite a heavy sub plot for a fairly poignant creature feature.

I didn't know they're gonna remake it either, mmmmmmm not sure I like the sound of that, we'll see.

The BBC copy is atrociously dubbed but I'm still keeping my copy.
The French subtitled version is much better and Laloux' other movies, Gandahar and Fantastic Planet are also worth a look, although I think Time Masters is the best of the bunch.
There's a horrible US recut, dubbed version of Gandahar called Light Years which is probably best avoided.

The Man from Planet X (1951) is a great little movie. What struck me are the great studio sets, apparently left over from the Joan of Arc production.

I will say though, I think my all time fave is The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) followed very closely by Forbidden Planet.

So many elements to TDTESS that just blow me away, the Bluray is a treat.

I saw a US dubbed version at the weekend of Haute Tension/Switchblade romance, the actors sounded ridiculous, managed to get to see the French version though.
Another bad dub was District 13, the hard arse gangsters sounded more like chartered accountants:D

Dubbing is the work of Satan and looks awful even when the same language is being used. The only seamless example I know of is The Name of the Rose: all the dialogue has been replaced as aircraft noise made the original sound unusable.
The dubbed version of Akira is pretty bad although more recent efforts seem to be done with a bit more sensitivity.

I've got the film Das Boot, the dubbing in that didn't seem too bad and the mouth/voice seemed to synch. Although I definatly prefer watching the film in it's original German language.
