Favorite Darkamated Film

I consider the late 80's to mid 90's to be the best years for animated films. During those years, Disney wasn't completely dominating the world of animation, and we got classic fantasy films from Don Bluth and others. Many of those films were somewhat lighthearted but had strong dark overtones.

My list includes:
An American Tail
The Brave Little Toaster
The Land Before Time
All Dogs Go to Heaven
Rock-A-Doodle
FernGully
We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story
The Pebble and the Penguin
Pippi Longstocking
Anastasia

I liked....

Land Before Time....unlike the sequels, the original film's really good.....I remember crying during the scene where Littlefoot's mom died when I saw it in the theater....

All Dogs Go To Heaven....though it has its share of lighthearted scenes,it's surprisingly dark for a children's film (esp. the scene where Charlie has a nightmare about going to Hell)...I also found the ending really touching...

Anastasia....I love the songs, and the animation's really good....

Actually, even though it came out a bit earlier than the time period specified (1982,I believe)....My favorite animated film is also non-Disney,and fairly dark for a children's film.....Rankin Bass' animated adaption of Peter S. Beagle's The Last Unicorn...

I find most Bluth's dark films to be misfires in terms of tone. However, Land Before Time was one of his few films that was right on the level. Yes, it was dark, but it's story was well-written and the characters were likable. It's also a very innocent film which I find rare in most feature animated films.
