Fashion photography vs Commercial Photography?

I'm going to school to practically be a photographer, I plan on doing both commercial and children's fashion. So does that mean I would have to be a freelance photographer since I plan on doing my own thing? If so anyone here who is a freelance photographer do you have like an agent or something that books you assignments and such or do you go out there and do everything on your own?

I'm just curious.

Thanks

Commercial photography covers a wide field of photography, fashion is just one of them.

There are photo reps out there, but until you have a great reputation as a photographer, they will not be knocking on your door.

For a rep to make a living, they have to bill over $250,000 a year if they only take 25% of the billable fee. That only leaves them with $50,000 to cover all their expenses and taxes ... not nearly enough. Most reps have from three to five high volume photographers whom they represent on a continuing basis.

Before you find a rep, you will have to establish working relationships with advertising, modeling agencies as well as the photo editors of the magazines that use your type images.
