...and with no dates? My fathers side was so easy, Because for 150 years they all stayed in tredegar, ( a small village in wales) so census records I just kept going back and back.

but my mothers grandfather was called james alfred moore. on england records it only shows james A Moore, and there are millions of them!

im just stuck, how do I get passed this?
Thanks Scott, but no one in my family has ever met him or know anything about him, as his son (my grandfather) moved to wales and never spoke about him.

Do any of these look familiar?? If so, email me the dates and/or which ones, and I'll see what I can find for you. :)

Go on to free bmds if you know your Grandfathers wife maiden name. If not look under Marriage

Ask your relatives, people who know more about him than you do. Like where he was born etc.

To put a bit more on Lisa's answer, the marriage certificate will also have his age at the time of marriage, and should have place of birth. That'll give you enough info to actually start searching.

Have you got marriage, birth certificates?
Shouldn't a birth cert for his child show father's name and occupation?
Marriage cert has also fathers name and occupation?

If father's occupation is laborer it won't help, but if he has a trade or profession it might help narrow it down a bit.

This was the guy that married Hodder, you were looking for ref a few days ago? Did you find it?

If you do get an occupation here is a free historical directories site - it's a bit random and only goes to 1919 - but who knows you might be lucky :-)
