Hi all!

My first post here and I'm sorry it'll begin on a bad note. I'm a 23 year old executive assistant just recovering over a serious allergy attack. It struck late Monday and I finally recovered enough yesterday to return to work. I got to work and a select "click" of people were calling me a liar. I'm afraid this could have a direct impact on my job as the accuser is higher up in the company I work at.

To give a quick background of the office, there's a severe rift resulting from past drama. I'm a newcomer in the whole thing but I'm beginning to see why one side is unliked, but I do my best to just do my work and avoid the drama. The one making the accusations against me is a former paramedic. He's saying that my reaction was incredibly unlikely, but more to that in a moment.

I had been working a bit of overtime on Monday night when I suddenly had begun to feel a tightening in my throat as I neared a co-worker's desk. As I felt my body heat up my eyes locked onto what could possibly have been the culprit: the obnoxious reed diffuser on her desk. Up until that moment, I had been perfectly fine. I do have allergies, mainly to pine, lilac and some perennial flowers, but I do take allergy medication. I had no cold or any sort of lung infection and I perfectly clear after my morning run.

Having felt the reaction taking place in my throat, I immediately left and got out of the office, locking up on the way out. By the time I got to my place, 20 miles away, my head was pounding and I could feel the swelling in my throat from the outside when I ran my hand to my throat. I went to bed but woke up that night throwing up numerous times, each time scraping up my throat as I heeved. The next morning I called into work as I looked in the mirror to see my airway in my throat to be roughly the size of a nickle. Having enough, I went to the doctor.

Once at the doctor I had tests done and some injections made. They gave me a penicillin shot, which the coworker says is a giveaway that my story is a fraud, and I'm not quite sure why they did, but I'm guessing to prevent any infection or such if my body was to be attacked by germs. I also had an injected anti-histamine put in to halt my body's reaction. The doctors also inspected my throat with a scope, which was incredibly uncomfortable with a touchy gag reflex, and they found a lot of scarring on-top of the swelling. The doctors also found that my body had begun to break out on the arms as well, in spots that looked like dry skin. After doing more tests, the doctors determined that it was a good chance that the employee's reed diffuser was the cause of the reaction.

While I did feel better with the injections, my throat didn't finally unwell until late yesterday giving me my voice back and my ability to eat solid food. Yesterday was my first day back and I was greeted with the pleasantness of being called a liar and "that there's no way that a reed diffuser could have done that since a sudden allergy attack wouldn't last as long as his did." Aside from that "he's lying since they gave him penicillin".

I'm at a loss of what to do. He's the former paramedic so everyone believes him and rumors are starting to go around the office. I do have the appropriate paperwork, but I'm only certain they'll find fault with that.

Anyone care to back me up a bit on this? I'd really appreciate it! Anyone else have similar allergies to scented oils or plugins?

Jake,
Don't feel alone. I had a doctor tell me it was all in my head! (6 antibiotic allergies and he doesn't believe me after having to go to the ER.) The paramedic probably just has it in for you and wants to find some reason to get you fired. Legally, I don't think they can fire you over an allergic reaction but don't quote me on that. However, working in an environment like that is NOT healthy for you physically (allergic reactions) or emotionally (people doubting you and calling you a liar).

The best advice I can give is to check out all your options and STAY away from the scented oils as much as you can. Talk to your doctor/allergist about it and maybe talk to a lawyer about your rights. Definitely get as much information as you can before it is too late. Allergic reactions like that suck and take a lot of time to recover from. They are also no laughing matter. Take your best interests in to mind even if that means giving them what they want and quitting! Look for another job first though... don't want to be reckless, especially in today's economy!
Good Luck!
