...survival. How can its grip be explained? Has evolution gone haywire?
Or is the phenomenon of faith an evolutionary throwback?

Richard Dawkins has a somewhat unsatisfying explanation.
Dawkins narrates an astonishing anthropological case study (seen below); but it centers more on cults and religion, rather than on the origins of faith, itself.
