In Aug 2009 I had ALIF @ L5-S1, and just found out that I was one of the unlucky ones in that the Bone Morphogenic Protein did not fuse the vertebrae. In Sep. 2010 I will be having PLIF in the hopes of getting a fusion. The way I see it I have 2 options: a lifetime of pain and disability, or try the PLIF. Well I have chosen the latter. Any comments, suggestions or encouraging stories to share would be welcom.

Thanks,

DougB.

Hi Doug. I remeraber when they first started using BMP. There was so much excitement about it but before too long it turned out that using BMP was no better guarantee of successful fusion than anything else.

My ortho spine specialist told me that a second fusion at the same area has a very high rate of success, so let's pin our hopes on that. I have not had to be fused twice in the same spot in spite of having had 6 lurabar surgeries. Aren't I the lucky one? Lol.

I do wish you the best of luck. Please continue to post and feel free to ask questions or jump into any thread with a comment of your own.

Let us know how you are doing, okay?
