facebook chat always says online friends are offline when i click on them?

i don't really use fb chat much but whenever i click to chat with an online friend the chat window pops out and tells me they're offline. then if i go offlline on the chat and go right back on, it says that same person is online and availible to chat with, until of course, i click to chat with them.
 
facebook chat is always really slow. try refreshing the page. its really frustrating! i feel your pain. :)
