Extra curricular help? A longish sort of rant too I suppose?

I'm a sophomore in highschool. Right now I'm in brigade, but I want to join softball for next year. You can take it as a class period at my school. The thing is, I'm not into standing on the sidelines cheering anymore. I want my family to come out and see me play a sport. Only a few people have been supportive of what I want to do. Other people were like,"Are you sure? Really?", another said,"You should stick with cheer, or maybe swimming.". I asked a few people on the team how they liked it, and they all said the same thing first,"It's different than cheerleading." they acted all defensive. I know it's different, that's why I want to do it. I have to make my decision by this Monday to not try out for next years cheer team. I don't want to do it anymore, and don't know how to tell my coach. But I can't stop what other people have said get to me about how I will basically be an epic fail in softball.... Any advice? Sorry, long I know....
