I have a 2005 Sony Viao with Windows Home Edition. About 4 years ago I purchased a Lacey External Hard Drive (250 GB) and about a year ago I purchased a SimpleDrive External Hard Drive (1 TB).
About a month ago, my Lacey EHD stopped appearing on my computer when I went in to explore for files. The unit was on and it was not warm to the touch. I figured at first that maybe it was the USB port that it was attached to. I tried another USB port, but no luck. I then took it to work to see if it would show up on my work computer, but no luck. I then took it to Best Buy's Geek squad and was told that it was not even registering on their systems, even when they switched the cords. I would need to either freeze the unit to extract the files (maybe it would work) or pay to have a service do it ($600).
Last night my SimpleDrive did the same thing. The drive does not show up when looked for. The unit is still working, but not warm, and the light is on. It does not work on another computer. I haven't been to Geek Squad again because it seems to be the same problem.
My computer and external hard drives have not been in adverse conditions. I haven't been downloading weird stuff on the internet (pretty much use the computer for non-internet things, email, online shopping at reputable sites, and Facebook. The external hard drives haven't been carried around much, as they were extra storage units for music, photos, and ebooks -- all items I would really like to recover!
I just find it very fishy that both units went so quickly. The only things I think it could be related to are (assuming that they are not both dead):
--I did start using a Sony MP3 play about the same time.
--Although my computer comes up clean when I do a virus check, something is underlying with it.
Please help! Is it likely that my units are damaged beyond repair? Is there anything I can do myself? What did I do wrong to have this happen so I can avoid it in the future.
