External hard disk is demanding to be formatted?

I have a 1TB Buffalo External Hard Drive, which was working perfectly, until I knocked it over (on two occasions...it has a short flex). At first there were absolutely no problems, then music started to jump. When I tried to start my computer with it plugged in, whilst booting my computer would try to do a disk check; this would take HOURS and HOURS and never seemed to get anyway. Usually it would just end up saying "Null disk error" or words to those effect.

So, then I just started only plugging it in after I'd started my computer and it would work fine (still with some skipping, and some songs only playing half way). Recently though, it started asking to be formatted, but not every timee to begin with. However, of course, things deteriorated until it became unusable, and because the data on it is mainly music and films which arereplaceablele, I thought I'd just format it. HOWEVER, this has not helped at all, and although it's been formatted (To the original NTFS, which is what my laptop is on as well), it still says it needs to be formatted when I try and do anything.

Is my hard drivsalvageableble? I would really appreciate some help, but I warn you, I'm no "l33t h4ck0r" or whatever the kids are saying these days, so please feel free to patronizese me when giving advice!
