hey guys, has anyone ever been able to buy out a rental receiver from expressvu?

I have a 9242 receiver that they gave me as a free rental for a year. I want to buy it in 6 months when the rental is over. Will expressvu sell me that receiver or will they insist I return it? I like this receiver and since its been discontinued do you think they will sell it to me?

I found a store that had one left in stock and I picked it up tonight, but I would like to keep the rental one also since I wont be able to buy this model any more.

There is no buy out clause for rental box's. Believe they had a lease to own model before...not any longer it appears!

No you cannot buy the Rental equipment.

Something to do with it not actually being owned by Bell TV but by BCE if I recall correctly.

Rental units are not owned by Bell TV as Pinza stated. Having a 3rd party own rentals is a common business practice. Therefore they are in a completely different inventory and not purchasable. Unfortunately as I'd like to do the same since i know my unit works reasonably well compared to some out there.

Another argument that BellTV might use is that rental units are in most cases refurish units and if you go in store you will get a brand new unit

I never heard about any buy your rental programm and I worked at Express Vu for a year and a half

I kind of accidentally bought a rental unit from them once. Funny story. I did a hardware upgrade to replace my 5900 with a 9242 and it was a couple weeks later before they sent me a box to send the old receiver back to them. Needless to say, I didn't put a rush on sending it back to them but it was maybe 2 or 3 weeks after I got the box and was about to send it that I found a charge for about $200 for the non returned receiver. Now some people would have gotten mad at that maybe and argued that they hadn't been given enough time or something since it had only been a few weeks since the hardware switch. I didn't want to lose the PVR'd events and movies though anyway so after calling Bell to confirm that I now owned it since i'd been billed for it, I hooked it up to my computer to use the already recorded programs. I was actually going to send it back but it seems they put the charge on there pretty quickly if they don't get the hardware back right away. It'd be a lot easier if they'd take them back at Bell stores like Rogers does but as someone said earlier there's a 3rd party ownership issue or something. I know the price I was eventually charged was quite a bit less the the unit would have been new and although I bought it from them (and yes they confirmed it was mine now) in a round-about way as a result of an upgrade it shows that there is a way to buy rental receivers, sort of.
