here is my assignment:
2. As we have seen, children’s literature tends to emphasize moral choice and development more than books intended for adults. Choose any two of the modern novels we have discussed—The Witches, The Giver, Coraline, and The Bad Beginning—and explain how one of them is more didactic than the other. For this to be an effective argument, you must be able to not only analyze the “morals” that the books are advocating; you must also analyze how combinations of plot, character, and narrative tone work together to advance those themes.
Here is what I have:
In the book Coraline written by Neil Gaiman, the moral that seems to stand out is to be thankful for what you have. At first, Coraline thinks that the ‘other place’ is superior to the life that she is living now. With time she understands that she liked her life over the ‘other place.’ In the end, the book is conveying the message that you should not try to escape your life, your situation, your parents or the real world, because the grass is not always greener on the other side. In the book The Giver, written by Louis Lowry, the moral that seems to stand out is that perfection is not reality. The book starts out with Jonas, a young boy of eleven, living in a utopian world where everything is basically planned out as one ages. Jonas is set apart from the rest when he is “chosen” at the ceremony of the twelve’s to be the next receiver of the memories.
The moral is literally an underlying message that the reader must pick up on in reading between the lines in both of these books. In dealing with both books, Coraline and The Giver, neither book has a set lesson, it is merely interpretation. What one person feels that the moral is might be different from someone else.
I am not sure what to write next or what to do next, this is for an upper level college class and my professor said that he will not aide anyone because this is our last paper for the class. but I really need some assistance..
