Experiencing delay when opening photos & video clips located locally on my C:\ drive.?

This delay is always concluded by a slight noise from one of my external USB Hard drives indicating it has become active (spinning up), then the photo or video clip opens.

Why does my computer wait for the external drive to become active before opening a photo located locally on my desktop?

With my USB drives disconnected this does not happen, the selected item opens instantly, but I prefer to leave my ext drives connected...

I am running Windows XP Professional SP3 on a gateway M-6864FX Laptop.

Any ideas?

Well if I had to guess, for what ever reason the computer is probably searching for whatever it is you told it to find on the external harddrives first, I would suggest that you defrag your hardrives and see if this helps.

Its always good to defrag your hard drive, you can easily google a how-to [takes less than 2 minutes to start it]. make it easier for the computer to find what it needs, its like a free processing boost!
