months...would you use? Super nice female but four years old; the male that has everything she needs and a complimentary pedigree isn't 24 months yet...he is 16 months. Sure don't like to use males that don't have a permanent OFA number yet but considering doing an OFA prelim and if he turns out good or excellent, going ahead and using him. OFA's site itself says that if they are a prelim good or excellent they've got a really high probability of clearing with a good or excellent at 24 mos, the older they are at the time of the prelim, the higher the probability. Just a little hung up on using a male that isn't two yet. CERF is current. Both from lines that have had pretty decent luck clearing hips with mostly goods and excellents.
Would you use the male?
TippTopp: Thanks! I've never done PennHipp but know plenty of people that have and they certainly DO feel that the results are more accurate.
FidoCityGuide: Oh hell, I've done this for twelve years and have held office in my national breed club for three years...I just know from being on here that there are a couple of decent dog people on here and if I posted to my regular breed lists, would get all kinds of "scandalous OMG, so-and-so is thinking of breeding a stud that isn't two yet...blah blah blah drama" that I didn't need. You need an attitude adjustment and your condescending know-it-all attitude is one of the reasons so many people are put off from getting into showing or responsible breeding...get off your high horse because your attitude is the type that helps fuel the fire of the AR fringe and puts off the general public. What a nasty attitude you have and you sure as hell don't know have any idea what you're talking about.
Sheri, go check out the info on OFA Prelims...read at the bottom about the reliability of the prelim in relationship to 24 mos, especially with older.

From what you're saying, you'll be surprised at what you're reading. Also we had a breeder's seminar at our Nat'l and this was only one example of studies that support the info given.
He is not MY male but his breeder/co-owner is fine with me using him as long as I pay for the prelim. She is one of the top four breeders in my breed, judges, and has been doing this since the 70's and does use a stud under two from time to time with an OFA prelim of good or excellent being a requirement, of course.
Again, the only reason I'm on here is because there are some dog people on here that give an opinion I respect, if you posted something like this on any of your breed lists you'd get flamed...then again you're doing a pretty decent job of that...
But seriously, go have a look at OFA's study.
