exhaust problems in a 1994 ford taurus?

i have a 1994 ford taurus with a 3.0 nothing special but here lately it as lacked power, running hotter, and shifting harder, classic signs of a stopped cat. now this morning i went out and was looking at my muffler (i know it is not the cat.) but the hole piece of the outlet tube fell out i have driven it once and it seems to shift better an i in the clear if do i need to watch for more problems
