exercises to help with running?

im a boy, in high school, and 14 and i want to be able to run really fast at track and next xc season this year. i just got done with my very first xc season and it was probably the hardest season i have ever did. i have done 2 years of track in middle school, and they were hard but i have to say xc trumps them both. now to the good stuff: i need some excersises like what can i do at gyms and at home to be more efficient at running. i know i have to run and do ab and core work, but what else? work the arms? work the legs? get skinnier so i carry less weight and gain more muscle? i have some goals too:
800: break 2:15. current time: 2:22
mile/1600: break 5:15. current time: 5:45
5k: break 18:00 by next season. current time: 19:40. i know this is the hardest, but i actually know i can get a better time.
so help?
