Exercise question help?

So I want to lose weight and work on my cardio I am almost 16 and in high school. I'm NOT the tiniest (or most in shape) but not terribly obese. Anyway I exercise on a stationary bike for about half and hour a day at a rate that makes sure I sweat and speeds up my heart rate and was just wondering will this help my cardio and help me run for a longer amount of time? And how long will I need to do this until it has an effect?

Also since I am a teenage girl will this help me lose weight and become more fit?

Asking this because I did fairly well on my 8min run but I've had a break from running(stupid Sprain) and I have a 12min run comming up :(
