Exercise Plan; Gym In Few Weeks?

I have Health this semester but have Gym next semester. It starts sometime in January. I have quite a few football players in my class that are strong and stuff. I am not a very strong kid, I'm just a boy like one of those who lays around all day (I'm not fat though, I'm still pretty skinny). For the last couple months I've been doing push ups each night and crunches. I recently found out that in about the second or third week of gym, you test how many push ups and stuff you can do. I can do about 25-35 if I go a little faster. But at the pace the gym teacher will count, I can only do about 20-23 before collapsing because he makes you wait so long between each which makes it harder. The boys are expected to be able to do about 40-50. The girls are only expected to do about 20. (Although my friend who's a girl did about 50). I need a plan to get up to being able to more push ups. I would definitely love to be able to do 40, but don't know if that would be possible. How many push ups should I do and how many times a day and any other info you can offer to help me reach a higher goal. (I would be satisfied with 30-35, but would love as high as I can get.) I just want to show the guys who have come from the other middle school who I'm not high school with, that I'm not a total wimp like they might thing.

Also, I heard we have to run a mile. I think it's going to take me forever to run that mile but any ideas, tips, plans, etc that you can offer would be great : )

Thanks : )
