Excalibur (1981) - Lancelot pulls sword out of his own hip. How!?

In the movie Excalibur, we see a naked (sleeping) Lancelot (Nicholas Clay) pull a sword out of his hip, after having dreamt of getting stabbed (...I think. Allusion abounds here!)

How did they do this special effect? There is a sword point sticking out of his lower back, and it obviously punctured just above the pelvis, of what looks like a very well-crafted and articulated dummy torso. As he pulls the sword out, the tip receeds like it should.

This movie was released in 1981 (before CG) , and the imdb page says nothing about the effect, as far as i can tell. How did they do this effect??
Correction: On review of the naked Nicholas Clay footage, there is no receding sword-tip, but it still looks pretty real for a 1981 movie.
