Every question we were afraid to ask about E61 Internet & Blackberry Connect..

Ok so I've got everything up and running on my e61 when it comes to internet and email. I'm just a little confused on how this phone handles internet and blackberry connect email functions when compared to a blackberry.

Is it me or does the blackberry 8700g seem more instant? I have it set to retrieve headers only...could that be the reason why I have to retrieve AGAIN my new email when i open it?

Also there's a lot of times I can't tell which of my 2 pop gmail accounts recieved a new email. I noticed there's a little red thingy next to it...but I guess I'm used to my 8700g saying (2) or (4) next to the email account name.

And as far as internet goes...whenever I get on the phone it says "Packet Data on Hold"..makes a delay when making a call and etc. Overall makes the phone seem slower

It just seems like it has to manually connect for EVERYTHING.

Does the blackberry just log on instantly or something? What's the purpose of having the blackberry access points if you have T-mobile Internet Settings?

Making a default browser/accesspoint open links within emails?

Just overall wondering how many access points are required and how differently this E61 phone handles email and Internet?

thanks

Here's what I think I know after working with the E61 and BBconnect for 2 weeks. Disclaimer: I'm on Cingular.
I signed up for the Cingy data plan 2 weeks ago, was able to set up and install the Nokia BB client and register with BIS, no problem. I set up 3 POP3 addresses, 1 IMAP and the default Cingular (****@mycingular.blackberry.com) e-mail address. Everything seemed to work. I had no issues with web surfing or disconnections.
I went on vacation for a week, (had good signals all week) and during the week, here's what I determined:
1. I only got about 35% of the mail that was sent to my addresses.
2. Some of the mail I got came as much as 3 days late.
3. The phone would ONLY retrieve headers, and the ubiquitous message 'Message has more 4kb.' Most of the time, it would not get the body of the message, even if I tried to force it.
4. The phone sometimes only retrieved mail when I powered it down, and powered back on.
5. Some Replies I sent were NEVER received by the people I sent them to, some were days late.

OK, so before cancelling the plan, I changed my strategy. I deleted all of the POP3 and IMAP accounts and left the default BB Connect mailbox (*@mycingular.blackberry.com) as my ONLY mailbox in BB Connect. I forwarded ALL other mail to this mailbox.
No other settings have been changed.
Results.

1. Mail is on pushed reliably my phone within minutes after it's sent.
2. I can set 'Auto More' to on and full bodies will download automatically, or set it to 'off' (more practical) all message bodies can be retrieved when requested, including attachments. I've tested Word, Excel, PDF, and will test PP tonite.
3. With this scenario, the E61 and BB Connect works as it's supposed to.

CONCLUSIONS.
BB Connect, BIS or whatever it's called does not reliably pick up mail from external accounts in a timely way, nor does it send replies reliably. External accounts are on a very low priority, or none at all.

It can't, or won't get message bodies reliably, especially from IMAP accounts which makes it useless when used in this way.

BBconnect on the E61 only works when all your mailboxes forward mail to the BB Connect account.

I'd be interested in hearing if others have had different results.

Uh, "packet data on hold" doesn't make the phone any slower, it just is displaying a message while it's connecting you to the number.

Yes, you retrieve "again" because the message hasn't been retrieved yet.

this aint done yet...

"3. The phone would ONLY retrieve headers, and the ubiquitous message 'Message has more 4kb.' Most of the time, it would not get the body of the message, even if I tried to force it."

did you change the settings? there's an option to change it to retrieve ONLY headers, or messages and attatchments, and then I think all.

so the packet data on hold and active is something that just occurs ALL the time on the phone? I find it strange when I get a call from someone..the moment I answer there is this BEEP in my ear and I can see my screen saying Packet Data On Hold...

Maybe I'm trying to find out more of what it really means. And the Access Points entitled Blackberry and Blackberry2 are for? (i'm guessing to handle the blackberry.com email addresses?). Seems like the Blackberry2 connection is always running in the background...what is it doing? k ...time to read the manual..i'm learning more and more everday ....

"Packet data on hold" means exactly what it says. No existing phone can use GPRS and voice at the same time. GPRS must be put on hold to use the voice section of the phone. The phone is just being kind enough to let you know that. There may be a way to suppress the notification in the configuration, but it's never bothered me, so I haven't looked.

unless you are on the 3G network then yeah GPRS connections get put on hold during a call.

When you are using UMTS (3G) internet and voice calls can run simultaneously.

well yeah ...stopping the notification would be nice. hmmm...and all the "reconnecting" and etc..

Anyone know what the blackberry2 connection is doing? Why is it actively underlying and running all the time"

question:
1. im not able to setup my yahoo account on cingulars BIS page (thought cingular used BIS 2.1, implemented 1 month ago right)
2. my old email accounts that i set up on cingulars BIS page, are still present on the phone when deleted from BIS, how can i get rid of them on phone.

Thanks

With consistancy of getting mail, if i notice that i have not recieved emails for a hour or so, i just turn off Blackberry service and it gets override by BIS webpage and emails pop up that has not been sent to phone (very irritation, as i pay for push and not 5 min checks as i could with profimail) this is done under settings->e-mail->""email account"

So has anybody figured out a way to allow the BB connect to actually retrieve messages more than 4KB, specifically when using a BES?

also, I've been having trouble sending out emails (via BB connect) from my tmo.blackberry.net address. Currently my gmail is set to forward to my tmo.blackberry.net address where the reply-to is set as my gmail. this has worked for about 2 and a half years on various models of BB's and now my e61, until about a week ago. When I reply (or send out a new email) from this address, it indicates that the message is sent, but either a) never gets to the recipient or b) gets there hours or days later...
So, I attempted to "fix" it by setting my gmail to be checked directly via pop (through the BIS) like my other 4 addresses that function fine, skipping the forward/reply-to setup. Sending now works fine, but- now everytime i send out an email (from gmail.com OR the BB) i instantly get a copy of that sent email in my gmail inbox (on my phone only...) while I can just delete the email, like I have been doing, its getting irritating.
any ideas?

I changed my Cingular plan from the Smartphone unlimited to the Blackberry international unlimited (because I'm having to go canada), and I cannot access the internet through any of the access points that are configured. It was working fine here in Canada when the smartphone unlimited plan was activated, but I can't get anything working now at all. I've tried every access point that I've got, I've had settings sent from nokia... nada. Do I need to install the blackberry software before I am able to use the internet? I'm not talking emails here, just using the built-in browser, or google maps, anything.

there was a thread I cant seem to find now with how to fix my problem with BB connect sending me a copy of all outgoing email... anybody have a link? I know its with a filter I just wanted to read exactly what to do before screwing with the BIS settings

I have a question, is it possisble to turn of Vibrate on incoming BB email? I connect to my BES and when I get an email It vibrates. I can go into profiles and turn vibrate off but it also turns of vibrate for the phone. I only want to turn it off for BB. I know you can do this setting for other email accts like Gmail. Does anyone have a work around? Thanks
