Eventual Professional Photography?

Evebtually i want to be a photographer (pro). what slr-like camera should i get? i was lookin at the Canon Powershot S5 IS, Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18, Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H9, Nikon D40, Olympus E-420, Canon EOS Rebel XS, or Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi?
 
I have the Sony Cyber-Shot. It's actually not as great as I thought it would be:/ Even when I put it on a Manual setting and turn down the flash and lighting the picture come out bright and too intense.
One of my close friends has a Canon Powershot. She loves it:)
