Even cartoons deserve a second chance

Okay, I dunno if anyone's posted about this before, but has there ever been a cartoon that you didn't like the first time around, but later on gave a second chance and found out you liked it after all?

My big one is Invader Zim of course. I've already posted about this in the Nickelodeon subforum, but now that I'm watching more episodes as well, I can say that "The Nightmare Begins" was no fluke for me.

I also remember not liking Marsupilami just because of the name. The name is still kinda weird, but it wasn't a bad cartoon by any means. It had enough good moments, which of course I didn't really realize until I bought three tapes of it on a whim.

I haven't officially given Tiny Toon Adventures or Animaniacs a second chance yet (I've already said before why I didn't like either of these) but I might as well. After all, I'm now watching and enjoying the very same cartoon that once creeped me out to no end, all because I gave it a second chance. I think Zim has actually made me much less fearful to try new things in general.

I already mentioned this in another thread, but one show that I had to give a second chance was Johnny Test. *ducks*

When this show first premiered on Kids' WB!, I thought it was simply one of the worst and most derivative shows ever conceived. But after it atarted airing on Cartoon Network and the ratings began picking up, I decided to give JT another shot.

I still don't consider it an excellent show, but, endless reruns aside, I can watch Test in small doses and not complain. I actually like the characters of the Test Twins and Dukey the dog, I even like the parents to on extent. (I'd like to see the mom, Lila, get more screen time, but that a personal nitpick.) Ironically, the weakest link on the show (IMO) is Johnny himself; I don't know, his thickheaded stubbornness and "average boy/'Kids Rule!" shtick just grates on the ol' nerves sometimes. If it weren't for Johnny, the show would be pretty OK.

I couldn't stand Spongebob Squarepants when it first came on. But around the time of the second season, I gave it another shot, and now it's my favorite Nick show of all time.

I just figured Johnny Test was a bad show when I first saw it. Then when I watched part of the all day thanksgiving marathon I thought it was an okay show but not a good show. Another show would be Chowder. When I first saw it I didn't like it that much but then after watching it more I thought it was pretty good show. The Banana Splits I also gave a 2nd chance after I realized how funny some of the jokes are in the new shorts episodes.

For me its Chowder. When I first watched this show I hated it and thought it was the worst thing I've seen in a long time, then I saw the episode where Chowder and Shnitzle go to the bank together and I fell in love with the series...

Agreed. I started watching it for the first time in re-runs last year but wasn't impressed. Then I saw the episode Ski Trip. I was expecting the typical and cliche "snow day" episode but was amazed how well the episode was written. I made plans to watch from the beginning and ended up watching the entire series. While there are a fair share of below-average episodes, there are also a lot of really great episodes, too.

I disliked Animaniacs the first time around because I did not understand many of the jokes at that point and therefore found the characters annoying. Then, when it briefly aired on Nickelodeon a few years ago, I thoroughly enjoyed it and decided that it was one of the best shows of the 1990s.
