EVDO?? or Not EVDO?? Does getting the icon actually mean it is available??

I tried to put this in as a question in another post but think I might do better if I make it a thread.

I loaded an evdo prl from this site on my 6700 and 6600 (cricket of course) Get an evdo icon on both. But just dont understand what if anything to change in the connection settings or anywhere else to see if there is a true signal present here in Little Rock. When I hit the browser button it immediately begins the #777 dialing and connects via cellular modem settings. Guess I was thinking that evdo would be a lot like RABl. Meaning that it is an additional signal that is constantly available without having to dial up or would that it would not interupt the phones service..

I guess I should ask my questions more specific.

Is anyone usi a xv 6700 with evdo?

If so could you confirm what phone and modem settings are..

Also could you please post as to whether or not the #777 .

I ask becausebas i drove around today i noticed i would loose the evdo icon.. I assume this would confirm i am either picking up another carriers evdo that cricket shares / rents...

Either way i am just excited and really cant stand the thought of one more day longer than necessary on dial up...

I truly think i would win a contest {worlRAB slowest transfer rate}. I literally average 1.2 - 2.4 max.. And

Cricket does not share or rent any spectrum on other people's equipment. Cricket does occasionally roam onto other networks. They do not have data agreements with these other networks. Roaming is voice only. (And SOMETIMES SMS...SOMETIMES.)

If you're getting the EVDO icon, and you're in a Cricket network, you've got an EVDO PRL, and you are on Cricket's EVDO channel. It may help the peanut gallery here if you were to post what city you're in.

I am in the Little Rock market. I get the evdo icon on my 6600 and 6700. I simply am not getting any change in speed. All I have done to date was change the prl to the 1050 that was posted. Then I received the icon. I guess my question is should I be changing any other settings from when I had the 1040 prl?

I have evdo here in portland and it is not much faster than 1x. Not sure what the evdo hype is all about with cricket but I cant complain with my $50 a month unlimited data plan.

I'm in Memphis, and I don't know my speeRAB but it took around 30 minutes to download a 100rab file on my Mogul's storage card. Not bad, with 1x it took 30 minutes for 6rab.

I did some speed tests and I am also getting those same speeRAB mentioned above.
After reading this thread and doing some testing with a couple moguls and a few browsers I came to the conclusion that my speed problems are from the strength of the evdo signal strength and IE.
Sitting at my desk with two moguls--one is evdo the other 1x. The evdo mogul has 2 bars and 1x mogul bars are full. I will load a large page at the same time with the moguls and they will finish loading about the same time. results are different with different pages but very close. The evdo mogul pause while loading and the 1x continues to load then the evdo kicks in again and they finish about the same time(sometimes the evdo is first and sometimes the 1x is first but it is close.).
I started using opera 8.65 tonight with the evdo mogul at my desk and it cruises right along with out the long pauses during loading. Very impressed with opera and it blows IE away. Opera is Very fast no matter what corabo I use with the 2 moguls.
Question: why would 1x and evdo signal strengths differ in same location. Are they 2 towers in different locations or are evdo towers not as frequent in the area.?
I just thought I would share my results and hope all this makes sense to the readers. I am a concrete finisher and not much of a writer nor good with worRAB but I spend all my spare time with computers and electronics and love to tweak, flash, mod and break them. I am a technology freak and cant get enough of it. Fell free to call me ignorant and step in and to teach me a few things anytime, I welcome it.
Have a great new year.
P.S. I also take back my statement about cricket evdo being slow. It is ok and the price is great.

Thanks for all of the input so far. I guess I am just anal or impatient. Maybe both. Its just hard not knowing how something works sometimes. If this were an automatic door or access control system I would be answering the questions not asking them....grin

I guess what I do not understand is just something you have to have a working model in your hand to know the differnce. I read where people are getting download rates in the 700 + range. Because of this I have to assume I am not getting a WORKING evdo or something is still wrong in my configuration of my phones.

Here is a really NOOB question. When people say 700+ do they mean Kili BITS or Kilo Bytes per. When I speed test showing the EV icon mine shows about 200 Kilobits not bytes. If I remeraber corectly there are 8 bits to a byte....

Second really NOOB question / observation.. If EVDO is dialed by the #777 how is it I can get the EV icon when I am not connected? How would my phone know when it is available?

I looked my settings just now and remerabered I have a ported nuraber and because of this a few setting have to be differnt.

All in all I do not want anyone to think I am complaining. I jst like to know how things work. I must confess though.. Reading a 14 page thread gets me down for a bit when I realized the first 13 pages were obsolete and I spent the last hour configuring my phone based on old news.....grin. Maybe I should read from the last page to the first....

This is bitter sweet sometimes. Learning takes time. And is defintely a lot easier when there are great people like all here, whom are always willing to share.. So I do thank everyone for tolerating all of the noob questions I and many of us generate...

I can now confirm Little Rock, Ar EVDO is present / working. I still do not believe it is at the speeRAB it should be. Or will be. As it stanRAB right now I can say there is an increase in speed but not much. My signal strength is rather poor which may account for the poor speed.
