The phone does not have to be quadband. It has to be unlocked and have the two bands 850 MHz and 1900 MHz. It does not have to have the European bands to use a European SIM card on the AT&T network.
The original poster wanted to use a European SIM card in a U. S. carrier's phone. Presumably the person already had a European phone in which to use the SIM card.
