my new brother-in-law (i was married 3 months ago) was visiting our home the other night. he poured himself some wine and set his computer and drinking glass on our coffee table. right before he was going to send some emails, our dog (who is known for her bouncy ways) whipped by the table and knocked his wine all over the keyboard. the computer was virtually destroyed in the process. all efforts to salvage the data and functionality of the computer have proved fruitless. so, now i am in an awkward position. am i liable for the damage? what are my ethical responsibilities. i like my brother-in-law a great deal, but i clearly cannot afford to buy him a new mac. what advice would you offer me? thanks ahead of time for your consideration of a solution to this unfortunate situation.

Everyone knows you don't leave expensive, sensitive equipment where animals or young children can get to it. You just don't. I know if it was my computer I would have nobody to blame but myself.

But the bottom line is if you can't afford to replace it you cannot offer to anyway.
