Television is about ratings.

Many Yankee fans, most possessing the standard two eyes, tune in to ESPN, and ESPN likes, loves, cherishes, adores, and appreciates having those many eyes watching.

To keep those eyes watching, the many Yankees eyes (which, as a fan base, outnumber all other eyes out there), it has to -- how to put this? -- offer up various sops, shades of truth in Yankeeland that meet some minimal journalistic standard (barely scraping by, frankly) that keeps Yankee eyes happy enough to watch again tomorrow.

Announcing "Yankees are toast" isn't going to make those eyes happy.

Announcing "Yankees still in the hunt" is sufficiently enticing to keep those eyes coming back tomorrow, even when the magic number is down to 1.

It's all in how you spin it, to keep those eyes a'watching!

ESPN doesn't care about the Yankees.

ESPN cares about the people who care about the Yankees -- in particular, HOW MANY people care about the Yankees, and have television sets.

The Yankees have a huge fanbase so a lot of people will tune in if they discuss whether they will make the playoffs or not.
