What is the maximum amount of steroid medication from the injections can you get in a year? I know that they say three ESI injections are allowed, but I was told that you could also get more injected into the joints. I have had three injections in the last three months and one 9 months ago (by a different doctor). My new doctor does know that I had one back then by my old doctor. I think that they all were regular ESI's. The doctor now wants to do one in the facet joint. I don't know if this is too much. What does everyone think?

From everything I've read, there is very little research on how patients do with frequent injections over a long period of time. The decision to inject or not has more to do with a doctor's preference than any concrete risks or benefits.

Keep in mind that injections do not cure anything; they are simply a pain management tool. Injecting some sort of steroid directly into tissue can cause the tissue to break down eventually. But how many times it takes for this to happen is hard to determine.

Try to talk to your doc and get his opinion on the topic.
