error when changing background/screen saver on iMac?

i open the system preferences to change my background or screen saver and before i even touch anything it closes and another screen pops up saying 'the application system preferences quit unexpectedly' with the options 'ignore' 'report' or 'relaunch' and ive tried all of them and tried restarting my computer.
what can i do to fix this?
