Epson warranty replacement -- holding $179 on cc until I return defective unit?

I own a epson printer that has a hardware defect after year and a half. I called epson since others have said epson cust svc was stellar. i was pleased to find out they will indeed send me a replacement printer even thou it's over a year because if you register your printer upon purchase the warranty is extended by one year. That's the good news. Bad news is she tells me that they have to get a credit card number and will charge me $179 if I don't return the defective unit. I told her I bought it for $99 and she says it was listed for $179 when it launched. I told her it's a $99 defective printer so it's worth $39 and she would charge me $179?? I told her to go ahead but has this happened to anyone before? Did they try to charge you even though you returned the printer?

The only card I have is a debit card and I'm not sure you can challenge that type of charge.
