Hello everybody...

I have suffered with back pain for several years and am scheduled to receive lurabar epidural injections. I've heard from several people that it is really painful. Is this true?? I want to try them before a lurabar fusion..

Thanks in advance :)

I have a friend that has had one & for her, yes, it was very painful. Everyone is different though, so it might not be so bad for you.

Good luck if you try it out. It may be very well worth it once you're done!

Thanks! I did hear that it hurt and that it's not always successful. I'm still unsure if I wanna go through that. They haven't called me yet to set up the appt. so I have time to think about it.. Merry Christmas and thanks..

I just had my 2nd Epidural on the 16th. The procedure itself is not to bad. I had it done without anything but a local anesthetic, which is like a bee sting. The rest is just a little uncomfortable. I have had more trouble with the 2 days after, leg pain & headaches. The 1st shot seemed to help but this 2nd one seemed to cause more pain. I still have 1 more to go, hopefully it will help. I do think it is worth trying even if it just helps a little. I no longer am having the drop you to your knees shooting pain I was having, so I guess they did help with that.

Hi - I had 3 epidural injections several years ago and am now pain-free (for now, at least). The first one didn't seem to help; the second one helped some; and the third one made all the pain go away. "They" say that the injections kind of mask the pain of sciatica and allow the injury to heal.
I had foot drop and L4-L5 problems. Right now, I do still have some tingling at times and burning in my legs, but I don't have any pain. I definitely think it's worth it to have the injections. I had an excellent orthopedist who only did shots and was very experienced. I did not find that the injections were painful. The only time there was pain is when he hit the right spot with the medicine, and this was a good feeling because it meant that it was working.
I was in so much pain before the injections, that nothing could have made it worse! Good luck, and be sure to let us know the results if you decide to have them. Mabent

Thank you to all that gave me their input on the epidural injections. I am new to this forum and am grateful to all who responded. I will let you know if I get them and if I obtain any relief!! :)

mashis,

I think a lot of whether they hurt or not depenRAB on the doctor giving the injection. I have a great doctor that has been doing it for 30+ years and I have found getting blood drawn to be more painful. However, I have heard horror stories from others getting them from newer doctors that have had to be poked multiple times or had a nerve root hit during an injection.

If you have it done it's a good idea to ice you back a few times for a couple of days, but other than that it's not a big deal. I've never gotten major relief from the injections, but there are some that do so any conservative treatment is worth a try to hopefully avoid surgery.

After having a laminectomy/discectomy in August, I am now as bad or worse than I was before surgery, so unfortunately surgery doesn't always bring the relief you are looking for. Even if you do get relief, rarely will you be as good as you were before you started having back problems. You probably already know this, but perhaps it's good to hear it again from those of us experiencing back problems.

Good luck!

Brenda
