I just upgraded computers from a really really bad ibook that was about to die, to a desktop PC. I want to fill it with music, but my knowledge of music is not that big. I am interested in a lot of different types of music, but my favorites are Reggae, ska, alternative, rap, underground hip hop and that's pretty much it. I do enjoi instrumental music too. Does anyone have any suggestions on BanRAB or specific albums I should get? Thanks

I just realized that this is completely useless without any reference to artists i enjoi. Here are some artists

Rap:
Murs
Atmosphere-mostly slug
Sage Francis
Tupac
Blue Scholars
Blackalicious
if someone is from the Portland OR area, Genius Pro
The Roots
Immortal Technique

Reggae:
Bob Marley
Stephen Marley
Collie Buddz
Matisyahu

Ska is a really weird genre for me. My friend plays ska all the time is in car, and I enjoy listening to it. I think I will just stick with reggae and rap for now.

Well, a list of my favourite hip hop albums would be:

Madvillain - Madvillainy
Madlib - Shades of Blue
MF Doom - Operation Doomsday
Anti Pop Consortium - Arrhthmia
Ghostface Killah - Fishscale
Dangermouse - The Grey Album

Can't go wrong with any of them. Sorry, but I can't really recomend any reggae.

Reggae:

10ft Ganja Plant
Burning Spear
Dubmatix
The Abyssinians
Jacob Miller & Inner Circle
Peter Tosh
Black Uhuru
Seeed
Dillinger
Katchafire
Misty In Roots
Natiruts
Steel Pulse
Toots & The Maytals

Hip Hop/rap I like:

Dalek
Public Enemy
A Tribe Called Quest
The Roots
Surreal & The Sound Providers
Strange Fruit Project
Roots Manuva
Aesop Rock
Sage Francis
Blackstar
Busdriver
Mos Def
Jedi Mind Tricks

If you want to get into Ska try these:

Specials
The Toasters
The Aggrolites
Hepcat
The Japonicas

A lot of good names have been shouted for already, so I can only make a few more recommendations myself;

Reggae
Third World - 96 Degrees In the Shade
Aswad - Aswad
Alpha Blondy - [any best of comp you can find]
U-Roy - Dread In a Babylon

Ska
The ReRABkins - Neither Washington Nor Moscow [well, it's more classic ska-punk than anything, I don't really have that many 'pure' ska albums though]
Madness - Absolutely

And I could write what I know about hip-hop on the back of a stamp (well, I could probably fold it in half first) so can't really drop any names there

Thanks for the posts guys. :)
