Enlarged Spleen & Low WBC

I recently had a baby girl in September. In October, I had some tests done from complications after an emergency c-section. This included an abdominal ultrasound and CBC.

OCTOBER 2009
In the abdominal ultrasound, everything was normal. Spleen: Length 7.3, Width 3.6
CBC: WBC - 7.6

JANUARY 2010
I had another abdominal ultrasound for another, unrelated medical issue. Spleen size: Length 13.3, Width 4.1
CBC: WBC - 4.3 (Major decrease in Granuloyctes, everything else more or less the same)

What could this indicate? During my pregnancy I had several CBC and my WBC was always between 5.5 and 8.5. .Is the decrease over the last few months a significant concern even though I am on the edge of ''normal'' WBC range? This is clearly not normal for me....and of course I have the enlarged spleen to go along with it.

I have an appointment with a Hematologist...but until then...any thoughts? I don't want to be overcome with anxiety...

Thanks!

Are you possibly from Italian/Greek/Polish Decent-heritage? If so, its possible that your family carries the gene for Thalaseemia Minor which is a mild form because only one parent apparently had the gene. Its called having the trait.
Thalaseemia Minor presents itself as constant form of anemia -- there is no treatment to make it go away

The fact that you had a baby, your baby should also be checked to make sure the baby doesn't have the trait. If it does, then it will need genetic counseling if their spouse ends up also possessing the trait.

In my case, My husband and I were both 1/2 Italian. My family had the trait for thalaseemia although we didn't know this or anything about it until I had a son and 8 months later had to have my gall bladder out. My blood count was always high in white cells and low red cells, I have had gall stones and had to have the bladder removed only to know that I also have an enlarged spleen and heart.

My son was negative for possessing the trait since my husband was not also a carrier, just me. But my daughter has the trait.
