I own a 1990 Jeep Wrangler, and have had it since February. Since then i've rebuilt the chassis and body and replaced most of its parts (was bought from a man who lived at the beach). Now my problem is my engine is making a horrible knocking sound.

I removed both exposed belts and ran the engine on its own, and it still knocks, limiting it to something in the engine. Today I replaced the two lifters for my 1st piston, but its still knocking. I know Jeep engines are known for their noise but any ideas?

Engine:
AMC 4-Cylinder 2.5L, Fuel Injected
It is mostly stock.

I guess I should say 'Ticking' instead of knocking because it sounds like a bad lifter, but with new lifters its still making the noise, like a lifter would? Its a 'heavy' ticking noise, somewhere from center engine?
