Emotional Stress -> Physical Illness?

I tried googling this, but search engines hate me, so I'll just start here:

Let's say that we have someone who has been through some considerably tough times without necessarily realizing it until they had already pretty much buried everything extremely deep down. Let's also say that the person started to crack under all of this built up pressure, and mini breakdowns became worse and worse until the person started burying it again/getting a little better.

Now, let's ALSO say that something happened to this person that instantly brought back all of this stress in full force all at once to the point that they were hyperventilating/sobbing/rocking back and forth and twitching/breaking things/more hyperventilating, and this gradually became coughing and even throwing up until they literally had nothing left to expend in any manner of speaking.

Would it be understandable, then, that this person would almost immediately develop a physical illness? More coughing and feeling like they were about to be sick (though the two are as unrelated as they are related, if that makes sense), but also a high fever, the jitter-shakes and a general soreness?

(Somewhat related: If so, could they ask to take a day off from work while truthfully saying that they'd come down with something?)

And where would this person, or their concerned friends, find more information on incidents such as this one?
Yeah, I wasn't sure whether to put this under Mental Health or something Physical...
And when I said 'unrelated but related,' I mean that the emotional stress would cause nausea while the hyperventilating would cause coughing, and the coughing made the nausea worse. Most cases of coughing and vomiting I've found, it was entirely the fault of the coughing, and there was very little emotional stress involved.
