Emotional Reaction To A Story Tempered By Outside Influences?

I apologize for the badly worded title, but I was pondering reasons why it was, not only, that we can become emotionally attached to fictional characters, but also that things like music can elicit the same sort of emotional reaction when coupled with both those characters, and simple circumstance. By circumstance I mean instances where music is applied when a character say, says something significant in an appropriate instance. We all know music has different tones and keys and such, but how does a certain arrangement of notes placed in a situation do something to us. Is music a language that we all somehow inherently understand? We can recognize a sad song, and a happy song, a song conveying power, etc. And how does this mesh with human emotion in regard to giving life to fictional characters? I'm sorry. it's hard to word such an abstract concept... do any philosophers have any speculation to give if you can even follow me?

Its hard to explain this abstract concept... sorry.
