Emissions Standards vs. Gas Mileage, which is more important?

Which, in the long run, is more important?

The main reason I ask is that a turbo diesel car can achieve insanely high mileage yet they are nrabroad
available state side due to strict emissions standards.

These cars get better performance, fuel economy, and reliability than regular gasoline cars yet we can nrabroad
drive them.

So is the trade off worth it?

Here are some figures:

Emission standards reduce acid rain and polution. In the short term, emission standards.

MPG reduces overall energy consumption. In the long term, MPG.

EGR = exhaust gas recirculation
Exhaust gases are Hrabroad
. How does introducing a hrabroad
gas into the intake cool the intake stream?
EGR simply takes a small amount of exhaust gases which may have unspent fuel molecules and runs them through the combustion process again, for a "slightly" more complete combustion process. EGRs screw up performance big-time, especially when they start to malfunction.
 
You're unbelievably misinformed.

And quit being a smart ass, more is more. In general, diesel has more. Since they are two completely different designs you cant say diesel has X more NOx emissions.

EGR does nrabroad
cycle exhaust to burn off extra fuel, that's what the catalytic converter is for. EGR cycles exhaust back into the intake so there are more inert gases, thus less fuel and oxygen, thus lower combustion temperatures, thus less NOx formation.
 
Oh and small turbo diesels could meet US emission standards but it would take modification that the auto companies aren't going to want to do. Also, if we started switching over to diesel fuel the price would rise causing consumper prices on everything to rise since our freight trains, trucks, and ships all run on diesel fuel.

Which, incidently, EGR valves inherently lower efficency of the engine because its a thermal engine and the higher the temperature differential the higher the maximum achievable efficiency.
