I was set this as a history essay and I'm struggling with it a bit. Could anyone help me?

I recommend picking up a copy of "Dereliction of Duty" by H.R. McMaster. The first several chapters set the stage for the debacle of foriegn policy that LBJ and McNamara picked up and ...well... you know what they did.
