When I was growing up my parents told me that the eiffel tower was a gift from the british to the french for the great exhibition of 1891 (?)
I researched, this on the web and can't find any infomation to support this story, Is there any truth in this claim? If not where could this have from?

The Eiffel Tower was designed architect Gustav Eiffel for the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution. It was originally designed to be temporary... and is still standing today :S

It was designed by "Gustav Eiffel" for the Paris exhibition, it was due to be pulled down afterwards but it was so admired, that the French decided to leave it.....
