Egypt's state prosecutor office says it will appeal the sentences handed out in the trial of ousted President Hosni Mubarak, his sons and senior security officials as pro-democracy leaders called for street protests to intensify following the controversial verdicts.Mubarak's defense team has also said it would issue a separate appeal of the convictions.
Details of Charges Against Mubarak
  • Mubarak is accused of ordering the killing of nearly 900 people during the 18-day uprising for democratic reforms that led to his resignation in February, 2011
  • If convicted, the ailing Mubarak could face any sentence from the death penalty to a few years under house arrest in the hospital
  • He also is charged with corruption, abuse of power and squandering public wealth
  • His sons, Gamal and Alaa, face corruption charges for which lengthy jail terms could be imposed
  • Some fear a possible new round of street violence as relatives of those killed demand the death penalty
  • There are unconfirmed reports that the interim government could postpone the verdict until after scheduled presidential elections
