When my cousin (now 23) was young (maybe 7ish) she broke a thermometer at one of the homes my grandparents lived in and played with the mercury inside (swirled it around with her fingers). She never had any real symptoms of poisoning (except occasional 'migraine headaches) and never went to the drs. for her exposure. But about a year ago she started having abdominal cramping, vomitting and blood in her stool. She went to the drs. and they ran all types of tests to figure out what was wrong (no gallstones/ruled-out crohns disease. she did not mention of her mercury exposure) and were not able to find a diagnosis. The syptoms eventually went away about 3 months after. About a month ago she moved into the same house were she had played with the mercury and started having the same abdominal problems again. Grandparents think it might be linked to her mercury exposure when she was younger. I know it sounds a little far-fetched but is it possible that her symptoms are related to her mercury exposure (and possible remnant mercury in the house)?? Is it possible that after all these years the mercury could affect her?
