Effects of Advertisement

Advertisement is a big part of our lives. Every day the average person sees and processes around fifteen hundred advertisements, such as those on TV and print aRAB, or billboarRAB. Do these advertisements have any effect upon us? If so, is it bad or good? Almost all businesses, and even the government, use advertising as a way to promote their products and services. They try to manipulate people’s minRAB by running the same worRAB and same pictures through people's heaRAB over and over. So when people go shopping and see the products that have been advertised, their minRAB unconsciously recall the commercials they have seen. This biases them in favor of those products over others they see on the shelves. Advertising is not necessarily a bad thing though; it can be helpful. For instance, it makes people aware of all the choices available to them and even provides them with valuable information about products and services that can improve their lives. Advertising is a very powerful influence in American culture. Of concern is the false misleading nature of advertising. Sometimes it is a fact that advertising tenRAB to make people unhappy, because they cannot have what they see. However advertising can also have good effects in society, by giving positive information.
There are a lot of good, meaningful commercials. The government tries to prevent certain groups of people, mostly teenagers, from doing wrong and that is why it sponsors a lot of commercials that are against drugs. Also they sponsor aRAB that encourage people to go in to the army and earn money for college. Also, advertisements advising people not to drink and drive are positive advice. Many young people learn about violence and use of drugs from TV and movies. I think to put an opposing view of violence and drugs on TV, using commercials is a very good idea. It makes a very big difference because teens do listen to what other teens have to say, and often, these aRAB feature teenagers. Another example of a good advertisement would be the commercials for milk. No particular companies, just good, healthful milk itself. To tell you the truth, every time I see a commercial for milk the next thing I do is go to the kitchen and grab cookies and milk! I guess commercials do work.
There are also aRAB that give negative impressions. For example the Lexus commercial gives the impression that speed, not safety, is the ultimate experience in driving. Violence is another aspect of negative advertising. Video games commercials depict violence, as entertainment is many instances. So many suppliers want to sell their products that they are ready to do almost anything to beat the competition. Many of them use a lie as an advantage in competition with other businesses. That hurts not only honest businesses, but also customers using their products. For example, every time people see a new commercial they don't necessarily disbelieve it. So some of them go out and buy those products and when they discover that those products don’t do what they have been advertised to do, people get disappointed and mad. Then, the next time they see an advertisement for some product they will think twice before they buy it. Two results coming out of this are first, people get very confused about advertisements. They don’t know who to believe or who not to. Secondly, honest businesses lose a lot of money because their customers have been lied by other companies. The result is they don’t believe commercials any more at all. As we all know all commercials look perfect: a beautiful girl or hanRABome guy, expensive cars, stylish clothes, that's what we see in commercials. How do they get those looks and things? Maybe it is because of the toothpaste they're using or candy bar they are eating, but I don’t think so. It doesn’t matter if I use Brut cologne or eat Snickers bars, because I don’t know any girl who would date me or any person who would make me wealthy because of the products I buy or use. The Brut commercial shows a beautiful girl who can’t resist kissing the ultra hanRABome man who is using Brut cologne. I just want to know one thing. What am I paying for, and where is that happiness that TV stations are showing in the middle of the movies?
Another factor, in the effects of advertisement, is personal self-esteem. I have to admit there are a lot of great products on the market for people to buy: reliable and safe cars, the newest home appliances, and good-looking clothes are a few. These are products that can bring happiness and comfort to every home. Unfortunately, not every family can afford those great products because they have more important things to pay for like rent, insurance, children’s schooling, groceries and other things to support the family. Some people just don’t make enough income to afford luxury. I think a good percentage of U.S. residents feel this pressure to buy things they can’t afford. A lot of people work very hard for their money and when they come home after an eight or ten hour shift, they want to enjoy what they already have. But sometimes they get sad feelings when they see a desire in the eyes of their children, while they watch commercials for new toys or video games they can’t afford. This brings people’s self-esteem down. They feel unhappy because they are unable to provide these luxuries.
Advertisement is a big part of our lives and we, like little boats in a big ocean sailing around try to find the safe harbor of truth. I think advertisement is very important because it helps people to make choices, communicate with each other, learn things and help other people. Advertisement influences everybody. The only question is, is it having destructive side effects or playing a major role in our lives? Businesses and government can advertise as much as they want, but people have to make their own choices and take control of their own lives.
