Ok so my friend is doinga chemistry assignment for IB (international bacclaureate) and i'm trying to help her.
they need to design their own experiment which investigates intermolecular forces. Because i'm doing a biomedical degree, they only way i could help her was suggesting using a cell (for the cell membrane) and investigate the effects of pH, non-polar solvents and temperature have on the tertiary structure of integral membrane proteins. (the reason being is that her experiment can't be too simple i.e. just investigating bioling points)
I'm not entirely really sure what kind of cell (for the cell membrane) to use, and especially, how to measure these effects?
i was thinking just a simple beetroot cell or something similar, and then pH, non-polar solvents and temperature will cause the integral proteins to denature and thus, leaking the cytoplasmic contents.
perhaps there is a dye that she can use that she can soak the cell in the night before, so that when the membrane does burst, she knows it has burst??
i would appreciate the help. i just want to give her the right idea so she can continue!
