Hi,

I am totally new here I have one question for you guys. I bought HTC Magic (Google G2) and managed to set it up for MMS. Finally MMS started to work and an EDGE icon appeared at the top of the screen. Sometimes upload arrow appears, sometimes not (even if I am actually not sending any MMS). I wonder if I am going to pay some extra money for Data Connection or just regular money for MMS (one MMS = 0,5 usd). I am not aware I have bought some data program from my operator (currently Czech Republic, T-mobile). Is it OK, that Edge upload is working, even if I am doing nothing? I tried running some program that is using net, but it said I have no connection.

Thanks, for your help.

Welcome to the AC Forum fugeesk.

The G (GPRS), E (Edge), or 3G icon appears at the top of the screen to indicate the fastest data connection the phone is currently connected to. These will disappear and you will connect to WiFi if a WiFi router is in range that you have access too.

So, when you see the E icon, it just means that the mobile network transmitter that you're connected to supports Edge, which is faster than GPRS. It also means that it doesn't support 3G.

The up and down arrows next to the icon indicate data being sent (up), or received (down). It is worth noting that the up arrow indicates an attempt to upload some data, even if it doesn't actually succeed.

You own an Android phone, so there are a lot of things that use data, not just MMS. Android itself checks GMail, checks for updates to its firmware, updates to all apps that are installed, synchronises your email, calendar, etc. Any app you have installed may also be accessing data.

My advice would be to do a simple test. While NOT connected to Wifi (when you can see an E icon), open the browser and try and load a webpage. If it loads then you have an active mobile data connection. If it doesn't load, then you don't have a mobile data connection.

If you do have an active mobile data connection, then you will either be charged a fortune for it (if you don't have a data allowance or data plan), or you must have a data plan. Check with your mobile network customer services to find out what kind of data allowance, if any, you have on your price plan.

If you don't have an active data connection, then it's likely that data is simply turned off on your price plan and you don't have any data access at all. MMS message can use a special type of data connection that only works for MMS. The data icon will still flash (the up/down arrows) but it will not work for other types of data (e.g. Browser, apps, synchronization, etc).

Thank you very much for your reply extorian.

As you have advised, I tried to opening some browser and got message: Web page not available I am really glad nothing opened because I really do not need a data transfer. I have got wi-fi everywhere I need (home, work, school).

Up E icon now flashes everytime I look on my phone. He is really trying to send something does not have a chance...
