Easy to get a photo in front of the Las Vegas sign?

I'm going to vegas with a group of 10, and we'd like to get a group photo in front of the las vegas sign. Is this even possible? As in is it on a super busy highway and we'd risk death trying to get a shot? Also we'd need transportation to get there, I'm guessing a cab driver would not be happy about taking us there and waiting for us while we take photos. Any thoughts? Thanks
 
It is now easier than before. The county has installed a pull off and parking lot so visitors can now get there, park and safely take your photo. Taxi drivers are more than happy to do that for you. You have to realize that the meter will be running though.Done all the time.
