The east coast is fab!
Cairns is wonderful and the great barrier reef off of Cairns is stunning. There are great hostels offering great deals there (although it's been a few years now since I did it)
Airlie Beach is a must as is Mission Beach.
The sunshine coast (north of Brisbane) is wonderful - Noosa Heads being the highlight.
Gold Coast (south of Brisbane) - save time for there
Byron Bay next stop - just into NSW, hippy place but great to relax for a few days.
Lovely coastal scenery on the way down through NSW to Sydney which is awesome - loads to see and do there.
Go out to the Blue Mountains from Sydney.
Don't miss capital Canberra.

Depends on how far down or up the east coast you are going.

I backpacked Oz alone for a year. Don't be afraid of doing it alone, it's fab and was the making of me. I met so many people because I did it alone, lots of whom I am still in touch with now, years later. It's a very safe place to travel alone in. Enjoy! You wil NEVER forget the experience

you jammy so and so!!!

i would love to do that but aint that the whole point of back packing not knowing where your gonna stay and not knowing what people you are gonna meet???

i wouldnt do it on my own though - i would cack myself!!
