Earth Science Help needed about volcanoes.?

Volcanoes are generally not preserved in the geologic rock recordasthey are eroded away. However, the various materials erupted from volcanoes are often foundpreserved in the rock record.

QUESTION:

How could you infer what type of volcano erupted in a given area based on the type of volcanic deposits now found as layers of rock?

I looked through my science book and i could not found a thing.

I need specific examples and need toknow if some materials may be linked todifferent types of volcanoes.

I need a source to help me find this at the very least.
