I am new to this, so bear with me. I hope there is someone out there that can understand what I am going through or at least offer some kind of help. I am about to lose my mind wondering what is going on with me.
I have been having a problem with my ears. Mostly, my left ear, but my right sometimes bothers me. I have been to an ENT who is sending me to a specialist on the 21st but for now, I am worried.
I started losing my hearing in my ear about five years ago. At first, I was plagued by this roaring noise that got so bad that I had to put a fan on at night just to drown out the sound. I saw my general practioner, who said that I had fluid behind my eardrum and prescribed me some medicine. This seemed to work for a while, but the noise came back. I didn't really notice the hearing loss until much later. The following year, my daughter was talking softly to me while we were laying in the bed one Saturday morning. When I didn't respond to one of her questions, she asked me if I heard her. I realized that the hearing was a little fuzzy, but I wasn't alarmed. I just went back to the doctor, who couldn't see a thing wrong.
To make a long story short, six months ago, I started having problems with my neck. The pain started right behind my left earlobe and shot down my shoulder. It was so painful that I went to the Emergency Room. I had xray after xray trying to find out what was causing the shoulder pain, but to no avail. My bones are fine. My tendons are fine. Everything looked fine but my neck behind my ear continued to ache constantly.
I finally ended up going to an ENT because the hearing loss was getting so severe that it was affecting my work quality. (I am a medical transcriptionist) My ear canal looked fine but my hearing loss was quite severe on the left side. The doctor said I had mixed hearing loss and was concerned because of my age. He is now sending me to have a MRI. He said that the left side of my neck was a little fuller than the right side and that he wanted to ease both of our minds by doing the MRI. I asked what he thought, but he said that he just didn't know right now, that we will have to wait for the results.
Could someone tell me why he is so concerned?
