E70 weirdness After Being Up for a While

cherry :P

My E70 (flashed to latest firmware a few days ago, 2.0618.07.10 31-08-06 RM-24) is weird after being left on for a few days -- a key press will generate the tone but the tone will continue to be generated until another key is pressed, and the menu key stops working.

Any ideas? Should I just assume I need to reboot the phone every night?

No, you should just assume you need to reboot the phone every time you experience weirdness. Seems like a lot less rebooting. I experience weirdnesses usually once or twice a month and a reboot (so far) always clears them up.

I still have the old firmware 1.06... on it. Other than a slower orientation change I am not facing any issues. Have read many forums warning people not to upgrade to the latest firmware... phone goes dead or faces other issues... dont think i have the guts to try and do the upgrade myself... if the phone goes dead on me, i'd have to leave it at the nokia care centre for 1-2 days... that i cant afford!

Well, damn. Wish I could revert the firmware. I'm half-considering maybe returning it and seeing if I can get an older firmware, maybe ...

yeah, try going to one of them nokia care centres (if you have one of them in US). They might be able to uninstall the firmware completely and flash it anew for you - and that too free if your handset is under warranty.

Try a master reset as suggested....most of the time that fixes the problems after a flash....if that doesnt work, then you have a problem

Just wondering.... Has anyone done a master reset on their e70 with the new F/W already installed? How`s it done and the benefits? Thanks

I'm running the new firmware without issue. Have you tried reloading the firmware? I did this after on the old firmware (1.6) and it helped with the problems I was having then. Perhaps it's worth a shot?

That tone issue was actually one I had with the old firmware version and it stopped when I upgraded to the new firmware. A lot of the issues I had went away or got better after the upgrade actually. Though the portarit/landscape lag still needs work. Just do a master reset and see if that works. I do shut my phone down overnight once about week though. Been a habit of mine for years.

To all of you who successfully upgraded their E70s to the latest firmware; did you guys face any issues while doing it on your own? i read a lot of forums with lots of people crying foul over how their sets went dead etc. any advice on what i need to take care of while doing the upgrade using Windows XP Pro on my laptop?

I have already downloaded and installed the Nokia Software Updater utility but didnt have the gall to go forward with the firmware upgrade... after reading all the problems in various forums.

thanks & regards

Thanks for posting that reset code. I will keep it in my reserve for possible future need. I had definite concerns about doing the firmware upgrade myself. I used my pc at work and just followed the directions on the downloaded upgrader. The first try I did something wrong, skipped a step or something and it didn`t take. So I did it again and Viola !!! success. My web browser has not crashed on me yet. I would recommend this and I would use this procedure with another phone. I am very happy with the way it turned out. My only new issue is now the phantom vm arrives with every startup. To me this is not a big enough issue to worry about. The more stable browser far out weighs it. This phone is a def. keeper. I do change phones a lot tho , so I don`t use it for days and days. I like variety....cheers

I upgraded my e70-2 to the new firmware without issue. I mention my model number as i think a lot of the posts about bricked phones were a while ago on the -1 model. That's not to say that someone with a -2 model didn't brick their phone.

It's always a risk but I've never bricked a phone and I've done loads of upgrades. Here's a few tips that I do to ensure a smooth upgrade:

1. Make sure your phone is connecting properly to your computer and stays connected.

2. I never upgrade during a lightning storm.

3. Turn off all screen savers, anti-virus, or windows hibernation.

4. Place the phone on your desk where you can see the screen, start the upgrade and then DON'T touch it!

5. I keep my daughter out of my office while upgrading!!

The upgrade is worth it IMO. UI seems faster, screen flip is faster (still a little slow though), and phone doesn't reboot as often.

thanks for your suggestions/feedback. By the way I am in India and I have the E70-1 version meant for Europe/Asia. Ummm not sure if that would cause any issues during the upgrade or not - not that it should cause except for the RF not much difference in the H/W.

Another question - bit out of line from this one... can anyone recommend a good wireless bluetooth headset to use with the Nokia E70? I was considering Nokia BH600, BH700, BH800, BH801, and Jabra JX10. Main factors are the range, voice quality, and the size (smaller the better).

thanks & regards
