E61 Euro spec - use in USA

I am interested in a E61 but ebay will be upwards of $400 for a phone here in the US.
One of the Dutch mobile providers (kpn.com) has a deal on a E61 for about $100 for a two year contract. Since I am going there in a few days, I am thinking about getting it. No other commitment than $16/month for a plan.

The phone has UMTS. Will that work here in the US? Second, if UMTS doesn't work will it fall back to something that will work with Cingular's EDGE?

Any other thoughts?

I bought a Finnish manufactured phone which I am pretty sure was made or sale in Spain. It works fine with Rogers in Toronto. I was in New York and Dallas last week and it worked fine with Cingular's Edge. Rogers doesn't have a 3G network yet so I cannot advise on that. I have some concern that when we get 3G it may be on a different frequency than the phone is designed to work with. I love the phone. With Cingular you also have the option of using Blackberry Connect.

If you pay $16*24 = 384 + 100 = $484 to the euro carrier, wouldn't it be quicker and cheaper to get one off of ebay?

Other than that, fwiw, i have a Hong Kong e61 and it's working great..i love this phone, you will NOT be disappointed. I only wish i had more play time on this.

UMTS in the US runs on a different band (850/1900) than what is supported on the E61, which is on 2100 MHz. GPRS/EDGE is the only service that will be supported inside the US. The GSM side of the phone will work inside the US including GPRS/EDGE, it's just that UMTS side won't.

I'm looking at the E61 however, the thing that bugs me a bit is the 2100 MHz only support for UMTS. Other than that just make sure that the E61 is SIM unlocked before you commit or ask them to unlock it.
